Tag VIP customers automatically by lifetime spend

Add a VIP tag when a customer's total spend passes a threshold, so your email tool, discounts and support team can treat them differently.

Trigger: An order is paid.

What it does

  1. When an order is paid, read the customer's lifetime spend
  2. If it's over your threshold and they aren't tagged yet
  3. Add the VIP tag

How to build it

Shopify Flow Recommended

Trigger: Order paid

Conditions

  • order.customer.amountSpent.amount is greater than or equal to 1000
  • AND order.customer.tags does not include "VIP"

Actions

  1. Add customer tags: VIP

Klaviyo, Omnisend and Gorgias all sync Shopify customer tags, so the tag becomes a segment everywhere.

Get it: Shopify Flow

Make

  1. Shopify > Watch events (advanced), Event topic ORDERS_PAID
  2. Shopify > Get a customer
  3. Filter: total spent >= 1000 and tags don't contain VIP
  4. Shopify > Update a customer: tags = existing tags + VIP

Map the existing tags into the update or you'll overwrite them.

Build it in Make

n8n

  1. Shopify Trigger, topic orders/paid
  2. HTTP Request (Shopify credential): GraphQL customer { amountSpent tags }
  3. IF: amount >= 1000
  4. HTTP Request: GraphQL tagsAdd mutation

n8n's built-in Shopify node only covers orders and products, so customer tagging goes through the HTTP Request node.

Build it in n8n

Zapier

  1. Shopify: New Paid Order
  2. Shopify: Find Customers (by email)
  3. Filter by Zapier: total spent > 1000
  4. Shopify: Add Tag to Customer
